Two initial things about the Pousada Maravilha, which means
marvellous in Portuguese. Firstly, the name does it absolute justice. It is a
simply wonderful luxury accommodation and voted by a prestigious travel
magazine as one of the top two small hotels in South America, no less!
Secondly it is not located in mainland Brazil, but rather in
Fernando Noronha, an archipelago of small islands, some 550 km off the coast of
Natal. Not surprisingly, given the island’s natural attributes, it was declared
a Natural Park and given special protected status in 1988.
These two facts alone make the Pousada Maravilha one of the
most exclusive accommodations in Brazil. Not much chance of outsiders stopping
by for a drink or trying the Pousada Maravilha’s fantastic restaurant (more of
that later) that’s for sure, unless, perhaps, if they have their own private
plane. And when you do get there, you feel like you’ve died and gone to Heaven.
What we can say is that being located on the Southeast Bay
of the island and made up of only five bungalows and three apartments, it has a
direct line not to God but to nature in all its glory whilst, at the same time,
maintaining a healthy dose of true five star elegance and refinement.
The Pousada provides two types of accommodation, equally
excellent but catering to different types of person: five bungalows, which can
take in two persons, 54 m2 in size and which take in a King Size bed and
Egyptian cotton sheets. There are also three luxury apartments for up to four
people and 47 m2. The main difference between the two is that bungalow have a
hot tub on the balcony.
Now to the restaurant. Headed by the chef Fábio Taveira,
basically it’s the best place to eat on the island. Granted, there aren’t many
others, but it would hold it’s own up in any metropolis, so do try a variety of
what is on offer – Brazilian cuisine with a cosmopolitan touch.
It goes without saying that such a place comes with a pool,
spa, gym and massage room. It is five star quality after all. So no wonder
other accolades it has won over the years include: “Inn of the Year” and 3rd
Best Resort Island of the world.
